‘Spin Blocks’ sees Machinedrum (aka Travis Stewart) paired up with Father, the Atlanta-based rapper and founder of cult DIY imprint Awful Records. Establishing the label in 2014 to showcase his own music and that of his talented friends in the local underground music scene, Awful jumpstarted the music careers of Playboi Carti, ABRA and Tommy Genesis, and has given a global platform to a slew of artists like Slug Christ, KeithCharles SpaceBar and Ethereal.
“I made the beat for ‘Spin Blocks’ some time in 2019 when I was getting back into sampling again,” says Machinedrum. “I sampled this beautiful song called ‘Ujimma’ by The Lightmen Plus One and I played some guitar on it as well. I had my homie Miguel aka Holly come in and do some extra production bits and sound design to add some spice and then I sent it over to Father and he smashed it! I’m a huge fan of his so it was really thrilling to get him on this track.”
Father confirms the pair’s harmonious working relationship: “Working with Machinedrum was effortless. There were no limitations of what I could do and he really supported that for the track. I was able to just be myself and it worked out perfect.”
‘Spin Blocks’ follows hot on the heels of spacey R&B ballad ‘Star’ (feat. Tanerélle & Mono/Poly), certified club heaters ‘Believe in U’ and ‘Ur2yung’, and another rap bullet ‘Kane Train’ (feat. Freddie Gibbs). All are lifted from “A View of U”, Machinedrum’s ninth solo album in a glittering career that has cemented his reputation as “one of electronic music’s biggest and brightest stars” (DJ Mag). Also featured on the album are Sub Focus, Chrome Sparks, Tigran Hamasyan, Jesse Boykins III and Rochelle Jordan.
The record will be released on smoky marbled vinyl LP in a beautiful gatefold sleeve, CD and digital formats with stunning artwork by Pilar Zeta and custom typography by Victor Scorrano.
