Tove Lo Releases Short Film: BLUE LIPS. Features On New Major Lazer Single ‘Blow That Smoke’ // DIRECTED BY MALIA JAMES CO-WRITTEN BY TOVE LO AND MALIA JAMES
Tove Lo has released her latest short film titled BLUE LIPS. Starring Tove Lo and Ana Coto, the 25-minute short features music from her full-length album of the same title and was co-written by the Swedish artist and BLUE LIPS director Malia James.
BLUE LIPS follows the nighttime adventures of two friends Ebba (Lo) and Kit (Coto), as they blur the lines between reality, sex and their friendship, dipping in and out of induced highs, lows, nightclubs and bathtubs.
“The last chapter of the Lady Wood Era, and it couldn’t have been completed in a better way than making this film with Malia. All our late nights at her house where we watched movie after movie about love, friendships and all the drama that comes with it, sharing our own stories and feeling our very first film take shape.” Says Tove Lo of working with Malia James on BLUE LIPS. “I was nervous about the acting, I’m very comfortable in-front of the camera performing, but acting is a different thing. Malia really gave me confidence through out and I felt completely safe in her super woman hands.”
Described as “an escape from boredom and heartbreak that celebrates friendship between two strong women” by The FADER, BLUE LIPS was shot over 3 days by director Malia James. On making the film, she explains: “we’re exploring an era of feminism where more females are controlling the gaze. I want to show that women can be sexual and sensual in a way that’s not gratuitous or objectifying. Where jeans and tank tops replace miniskirts and curled hair. Where eating a burger or picking your swimsuit out of your butt are sexy. Where the entire essence of a woman is what makes us desirable. Where being yourself is seductive.”On working with her co-writer and lead lady Tove: “Tove has always been a dream artist for me to work with because she’s so fearlessly unapologetic about who she is and I’m honored to show that not only will she tell you to get your fucking tits out, she’ll also open up and share her heart with you.”Tove Lo concludes: “I love being involved in the visual expression of my music, and working this closely with a director that really knows how to capture the beautiful mess of it all was such a magic experience. This is just the start of a new journey!”
In other news, Tove Lo is featured in Major Lazer’s latest release ‘Blow That Smoke,’ that dropped this week. “This song has been long in the making,” Tove Lo says. “It started with me and Diplo just sending ideas back and forth until I sent this vocal I was unsure what to do with, and they made magic with it! To me the song is about the sweet escape from your troubles or just mundane life by being a bit reckless and romantic.” Listen to ‘Blow That Smoke’ HERE.
