Synead Releases Official Music Video for “Tropicao”
Earlier this month, emerging New York artist Synead celebrated the release of critically acclaimed debut single “Tropicao.” Catching the attention of tastemakers and power players from London’s BBC Radio 1 and Australia’s Purple Sneakers, to Tokyo dance troupe Dance Works and even Solange’s esteemed outlet Saint Heron, “Tropicao” has, quite literally, taken the world by storm in it’s two weeks since release.
Cementing the single’s status as a “summer anthem,” as proclaimed by Okayplayer, Synead is inviting us back into the world of “Tropicao” with an official music video. Directed by Matt FX, who also oversaw the track’s production, the official music video takes us into Synead’s Tobagonian roots with a trip to Trindad during the annual holiday of Carnival. As Synead traverses the island nation, we get a glimpse of the breathtaking landscapes of Trinidad and an authentic insider’s view of the vibrant Carnival celebration.
” At the beginning of last year I was in the midst of going through some personal stuff when Synead hit me up about the fact that she was thinking of heading back to Trinidad for Carnival. To be honest, the idea of escaping to warmer climates to make art we’d dreamed of was at the time the perfect remedy for my situation at home. I will never forget those 3 days on the ground driving around w Bjorn Nichols, Cid’s Trini cousin and our de-facto location scout. From the frenetic and hectic energy of Carnival to the calming vibe of Maracas Bay… what a journey.” -Matt FX
If unfamiliar with Synead before now, the 25-year-old New York native has been no stranger to the headlines thanks to her role as a co-founder of Millions March NYC at age 22. Synead recruited an estimated 75,000 people to one of the “most prominent anti-police brutality marches the city had ever seen.” Embarking on a new chapter, the singer/songwriter has stepped back into the spotlight with a new, deeply personal endeavor as a solo recording artist with debut single “Tropicao.”
Premiering via Ebro Darden, “Tropicao” is an ode to her homeland of Trinidad and Tobago that is a charismatic R&B/pop crossover single whose tropical-infused production puts Synead’s enviable vocal chops on full display. “Tropicao” is a collaboration between Synead, New York producer Cabo Blanco, and executive producer Matt FX. Blanco, real name Henry Cardenas, has championed Caribbean and Latin dance music sub-genres around the world with notable releases on Lisbon label Enchufada, and nods from Diplo. Fellow collaborator Matt FX is best known for this role as music supervisor for Comedy Central’s hit television series Broad City, as well as his role as an on-air host for both MTV’s Wonderland and Spotify’s Unpacked.
