Mothica Releases New Single ‘Burnout’ Ahead Of New EP ‘Ashes’
Acting as a one of the most prominent figures in a genre coined Dark Pop, singer, songwriter, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist, Mothica, has broken the genre out of its underground confines and championed it with over 80 million streams worldwide. Beginning with her debut EP ‘Mythic’ in 2015, the singer real name McKenzie Ellis, has been awarded beaming critical praise from tastemakers including The FADER, Earmilk, Bullett, Pigeons and Planes, Indie Shuffle, MILK, and many more on her ever growing discography. Now in the midst of the release of a brand new EP titled ‘Ashes,’ due on November 9, Ellis is giving us one more peek into the project prior to it’s release with a single titled “Burnout.”
Following the project’s debut single “Water Me Down,” a pop / electronic cross over track serving as a retrospective on past relationships, new single “Burnout” pushes the story one step further on the fervent three-minute single. Setting its foundation in the reverb of piano strings, “Burnout” gives way to a robust instrumental melody and the awe-inducing range of Ellis’ expressive and rich vocals. As for the message of “Burnout,” as with all Mothica material, Ellis dives deep into her own psych to craft the song’s poignant message:
“Burnout is reaching for the drink before the hangover sets in, and pinching yourself to make sure you can still feel something. It’s the last song I wrote for the EP, when it felt like my creativity was sapped. That feeling that you won’t have anything else to write about ever again so you play with fire before the spark goes out.”
If unfamiliar with Mothica before now, the singer first emerged back in 2014 with debut EP, ‘Mythic.’ The full-length project put Ellis on the map and established the fast-paced trajectory the vocalist has been nurturing ever since. Originally hailing from Oklahoma, Ellis has thrived as a figurehead of the underground circuit thanks to a series of lives shows across the nation including SXSW, and appearances on several collaborations with artists including Elénne, Icarus Moth, Diversa, Gladiator, Pusher, and more. To date, Ellis boasts more than 800K monthly listeners on Spotify alone.
Stay tuned for additional details on the full release of the ‘Ashes’ EP coming November 9th.
