EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Michael Push + New Single ‘Tell Me Why’
Sardinian born, now London based, DJ & producer Michael Push is no stranger to success. His broad taste and love for the 4/4 beat means he can straddle the boundaries from underground vibes through to a more commercial, crossover sound. He broke into the scene in 2012 with his single ‘Freeze’ which garnered MTV Dance Chart success and was signed to the legendary Disco:wax imprint. He has worked with X-factor contestants, had official UK Dance Chart successes and been featured and highlighted in the past by the likes of DJ Mag as new musical talent to look out for.
His new single ‘Tell Me Why’ is release via White Lips on 23rd February 2018.
How old are you, where are you living and how long have you been producing and Djing?
34 (still feeling like 24), I’m based in London and I’ve been releasing as Michael Push since 2012 with the single “Freeze” which hit #3 on the MTV’s Dance Chart and was then licensed by the legendary Disco:Wax. To tell you the truth, everything started some time before, when I was releasing under different nicknames, doing from pop to minimal techno.
What made you get in to dance music?
Rhythm is a dancer by Snap! Heard during a beach party when I was just a kid. Since then I’ve never stopped loving dance music.
Where was your first gig?
I was opening for a friend of mine who was resident DJ in a club in Rome, when I still was living in Italy, and I had to bring his bags for long time before having the chance, while learning his tricks at the consolle.
How difficult was learning to produce for you in the beginning?
It always came very naturally, and being a trained musician first it helped a lot. Especially at beginning I was doing so many different genres from pop ballads to minimal techno and I’ve learnt a lot from that. I still work to my new tracks considering them pop songs, even when they come out as club bangers. I know not many of my colleagues are able to write, sing, produce and mix on their own, but I’ve seen people doing magic with just a software and a piano roll, and it’s all now about creativity to be honest.
Talk to us about your latest release and the inspiration behind it.
Last summer I was travelling around Miami, Maldives and in Palma De Mallorca and I fell in love with the tropical house sound. It was constantly played during my holidays. Once I got back to my studio in London I started layering some ideas and naturally created something that recalled those sounds I heard. As usual, I still wanted to make a romantic pop song, which is my trademark, and something you can strip down and play with just a guitar and it still works. Here’s how “Tell Me Why” was born!
What’s the music scene like where you live and how often are you playing?
Living in London is a blessing, it’s unbelievable how many great things are happening and we have some great talents around. I’m in the city of the Ministry Of Sound and Fabric which are legend but some many great venues are stand spots like Egg, XOYO, Cargo, Electric Brixton etc. There’s a great club culture, despite what genre you like, here you are covered. Most of my shows are here in London at the moment, hope this 2018 will bring me also out of the country. My suitcase is always ready!
Which other DJs or producers are you liking right now?
EDX is absolutely the first name that comes to my mind at the moment, his style is unmistakable. I’ve also met him in Miami last year and he’s a nice guy. Chris Lorenzo also never disappoints me. I see Chris Lorenzo and I buy, I don’t need to listen the preview.
What are your go to labels?
On a larger scale, Armada releases great songs. Being one of the biggest labels in the planet they are able to cover many different genres, from deep house to trance, I often find myself to buy their tracks. For me is all about the songs though, doesn’t really matter what label are they.
Tell us about your DJ setup?
I have a weakness from Native Instruments and I own quite a few different pieces of gear from them. Traktor Kontrol has endless possibilities and it’s my favourite choice. As everyone else obviously I’m in front of a Pioneer console in most of the clubs, which is a standard pretty much everywhere. I’m planning in the future to bring some instruments with me in special occasions and start playing and improvising live. Stay tuned for that.
What’s been your biggest achievement?
Despite being charted on MTV Top 10 Dance or last year my single went straight to UK Music Week (which was a great satisfaction) for me the best achievement is listening to my tracks after years and still being proud of what I’ve done.
What can we expect from you soon?
Tell Me Why will be out on 23rd of February but there’s much going on in the background and I’m planning to release some more tracks, also in different styles. We’ll see which one will make the cut next!
