Nigerian Afropop star MR EAZI Shares New Single + Video, ‘Kpalanga’

Afropop superstar and global music trailblazer MR EAZI today shares his first single of 2020, “Kpalanga” (Banku Music/emPawa Africa), along with an arresting video directed by TG Omori, just premiered at THE FADER.

“Kpalanga,” which translates to “go crazy,” finds MR EAZI capturing the ebbs and flows of a powerful but strained love affair over producer Killertunes’ multi-layered, afro-trap beat. The track, which is dedicated to servicemen and women around the world, was inspired by the real-life love between Eazi’s military father and civilian mother.

Continuing his ascent as one of the most influential and progressive African artists to break into the mainstream, the last 12 months have seen the Nigerian superstar collaborate with iconic talents Beyonce, J Balvin and Bad Bunny; make his debut appearance at Coachella; and launch his groundbreaking, YouTube-backed emPawa Africa initiative to develop and incubate new African music talent. To date, Eazi has amassed over 260 million YouTube views, averaging over 4 million Spotify streams per month.

“My dad and mum have been married for over 30 years, and growing up I saw how committed my dad who was faraway in the military was to my mum. Now that I am older and more aware of the sacrifices that my father made, I see some of my friends who are in the military going through the same thing. The song is me speaking from the perspective of a lover who’s far away in the military, while his partner is waiting anxiously, engulfed with so much emotion because of the distance and the reality of their loved one being in the military. -MR EAZI

We don’t realise all of that waiting becomes frustrating, waiting for your partner to return. ‘Kpalanga’ is a special dedication to servicemen and women around the world and their spouses and loved ones waiting for them.”

Expect further big announcements from MR EAZI as he gears up to announce the next wave of talent in the emPawa Africa program — 30 new artists, dubbed the #emPawa30 — and a run of powerful new music as he continues to solidify his name as one of the most talented creatives across the music and culture space for 2020.
